What this assumes

Sole trader

Profit is taxed on you personally. Running through a company works differently — salary, dividends and corporation tax.

Payments on account

Charged when the balance tops £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax was collected at source. Student loan is never included in them.

Class 2 no longer charged

Abolished from April 2024. Profits above £7105 still earn a qualifying year towards your State Pension. If below £7105, you must make voluntary payments of £3.65/week.

Scottish rates

Six income tax bands from 19% to 48%. National Insurance is UK-wide, so Class 4 is identical either side of the border.

Pension relief

Contributions widen every rate band and reduce the income used to taper your personal allowance above £100,000.

Not included

High Income Child Benefit Charge, capital allowances, rental, dividend or savings income, and payments on account already made.
